It took me 2 minutes of listening to Senator Chris Dodd (Donkey-CT) before I realized we are in for the fight of our lives over this push by Democrat-Socialists for government-run healthcare. The strategy is in place, the talking points have been memorized and they're being delivered with admirable precision by lefitst mouthpieces such as Dodd. This may be Dodd's final assault on the U.S. Constitution by the way as he is up for re-election in 2010. His opponent is an extremely articulate and intellectual financial expert who will expose the fallacy of many Dodd beliefs and his role in this nation's financial collapse. Anyone remember Countrywide Financial? hmmmm
But I digress, let's discuss the mantra from the statists/leftists/socialists represented by Dodd. "Our nation's healthcare system is in crisis as over 47,000,000 people are uninsured and costs are going through the roof, having risen 85 percent in the past 10 years." Sounds very frightening does it not? Well some things you should know before we proceed:
1) There are not 47,000,000 uninsured, the number is purposefully inflated in order to scare people. It includes illegal aliens who should not be in the country, younger people who choose not to get healthcare insurance and people transitioning from one job to the next.
2) Costs are increasing....AGREED! But what is the time tested solution needed to lower costs? Competition folks, it works every time it's tried. It worked in phone service, computers and cell phones. It will work in healthcare costs as well.
3) There are problems with the healthcare system such as inefficiencies and the excessive costs of litigation. But every time legislative fixes have been offered up to address these problems, DEMOCRATS line up in lock-step and block them. Why do you think that is folks? Because the Democrats have never wanted to improve the private sector healthcare system throughout history. Ronald Reagan spoke of the desire by FDR to get socialized medicine back in the 1930's! Look it up. May I quote myself from a column I wrote last year? Bear with me, I know the length of this bullet point is growing faster than the federal debt!
From my article "Conservatives: Get real and grow up!" posted on February 9, 2008
"Mark my words, if this country brings in government-run healthcare, the downhill slide to socialism for this nation IS UNSTOPPABLE and the America we know and love will be gone FOREVER! Yeah, you heard Mister Meat and Potatoes correctly folks. The 'New Deal' was the beginning of a Democrat drive towards socialism and socialized medicine is the terminus."
So what's the solution offered up by these Democrat statists?
The solution of the statist is the SAME solution for everything: Allow the clumsy hand of the state to come in and try to establish fairness by seizing power in the PRIVATE sector, this time by offering up a government subsidized insurance program paid for by the taxpayer. Sounds like a fair plan right? Until you consider they want to make it available to families making as much as $110,000 a year!!!
Just as they did in the case of the SCHIP program in the fall of 2007, Democrats want these government programs to appeal to middle class people because they know that is where the majority of taxpayers find themselves. Once people abandon their private insurance for this government insurance option which will be much cheaper, the private insurance companies will collapse and go out of business.
With private insurance companies going the way of the dinosaur, it will be "easy as pie" for the statists to then move from the government provided insurance program to full blown socialized medicine. Don't believe me? Well do your research on the SCHIP program from October 2007 and see what you find. You'll be stunned to find that the Democrats are taking the same "back door" approach this time that worked for them back then.
One last thought: The federal government has run social in-security, medicare and medicaid all into bankruptcy. What makes you think they will do any better with a risky scheme called "government health insurance"? You may be willing to bet your life on it but I'm not.
