Everywhere I go, the litany seems the same. Pick up the newspaper, flip on the television, turn up the radio and people are discussing "What are your New Year's resolutions?" Who really cares! Most get blown off or outright broken in a few days or weeks if you're lucky. I stopped making them years ago because I thought it seemed silly to begin self-improvement on a specific day of the year when we should be doing it on a daily basis. That's just how I live my life.
Simply put, I spend every day trying to learn something new. Specifically, I try to expand my knowledge of our great country, the miracle of its founding and the historic evolution of our economy and society. A true patriot can never know enough about their country simply because they love it so much.
If you make any New Year's resolutions this year, please save one for being a truer patriot. We face challenges which are so seemingly insurmountable, it boggles the mind to even contemplate. Only by creating a nation full of patriots can we address these challenges and pull together so that they are overcome. Some suggestions (If I may be so bold) in the New Year to achieve this goal:
1) Commit to reading at least one book this year on the Constitution and Limited Government. My pick will always be Lewis K. Uhler's "Setting Limits: Constitutional Control of Government", published in 1989 by Regnery Press. It costs about $3.00 on the web.
2) Subscribe to the FREE conservative publication "Imprimis" by Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, MI. Just google "Imprimis Signup".
3) Commit to being better informed on the news of the day, perhaps skipping that favorite episode of "Family Guy", "The Simpsons or "Tosh.0" so you can instead focus on the really important things, like who is leading your country over a financial cliff toward doom. :-)~
4) Make an honest effort to learn the REAL HISTORY of this country and then pass it along to others by whatever means possible. Whether it be through Twitter, Facebook or by teachable moments in person, Americans must learn their history if we are to fix the mistakes of our past and avoid them going foward.
The effort to put this country back on a path to recovery starts with each one of us. By returning to a mentality of self-reliance and rugged individualism, we can slowly rebuild the destruction caused by 70 years of "government gone wild". Our motto for 2012 should be: "DEFAULT TO FREEDOM". Freedom means taking responsibility for ourselves and those we love around us.
We either embrace self-reliance voluntarily or have it thrust upon us suddenly and violently by virtue of a collapsing system.
