As our troops come out of Iraq for the final time today, I want to mention an unsung hero of it all. Someone once wrote that war is a "continuation of politics by other means". In this sense, the politician is just as important as the soldier who fights the enemy on the battlefield. For it is the politician who educates the citizenry of the stakes in our fight, rallys support and provides for all the funding.
Most people don't know we should have lost the Iraq War 4 years ago. At that time, democRATs were in full control of Congress and were attempting to cut-off the funding to our troops. By May of 2007, enough nervous Republicans joined the "treacherous ones" on the left, so that an override of President Bush's VETO was possible. Thankfully, the son of an Army soldier from Chattanooga was not about to let another Vietnam be created before his very eyes.
Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN3) stood up to the "Get Out of Iraq Caucus", fought tooth and nail to defend President Bush as Commander-in-Chief and demanded that Congress not try to undermine the war. He said the following in closing, after remarks on the House Floor:
"My nephew is on his way to Iraq, just as many other members' relatives are...let's make sure they have what they need. Let's not give up here. We don't need another Somalia, we don't need another Beirut. We don't need to LOSE THIS WAR! We need to stay, and do better and come out with our heads up."
Thanks in no small part to Wamp's efforts, our troops are able to leave Iraq after a successful mission with their heads held high and the middle east has a shining example of freedom for other nations to emulate. Not since Sen. Jesse Helms (R-NC) has the south seen such a fine statesman as Congressman Zach Wamp.
We could really use him back in the People's House, or better yet in the U.S. Senate, replacing that "RINO", Lamar Alexander.
