The Normandy Invasion: Could we do it today?

I got up to watch my Saturday morning financial shows on Fox News Channel and instead of getting some "Bulls and Bears", guess what I got?  A nice, big helping of "Dumbo the Puppet" doing what he does best, reading a teleprompter at Normandy.  "Oh yes, the anniversary of D-Day is on a weekend this year, I forgot", I thought to myself as I searched for my bottle of ginko biloba.

My short-term memory may sometimes be lacking but my long-term is crystal clear.  I remember a time when a President got up and gave ALL HIS SPEECHES in support of our troops in harm's way, not just some of them like "Dumbo the Puppet".  Oh sure, Dumbo will get up there today and laud the bravery and sacrfice of so many from the "Greatest Generation" but tomorrow he'll get up and say our troops in Iraq are fighting a war of choice or being made victims of flawed decision making.  By the way, I shut the TV off as Barack read his teleprompter with flawless precision, words mean nothing when they are delivered by a man-child who commands no respect.

I'd rather honor the men of D-Day on this 65th anniversary by re-reading what I wrote a year ago and listening to the speech Ronald Reagan gave on the 40th anniversary.  Now that was a speech if I've ever heard one!  The link is at the bottom of this entry.  Enjoy!

The Normandy Invasion:  Could we do it today?
by the INFORMER  June 6th 2008

What's so special about June 6th you may ask?  Well it's the 64th anniversary of D-Day, the Normandy Invasion, where America made an all-out assault to take back a continent and break it free from the tyranny of Nazi fascism.

The United States could NOT undertake such an invasion today!  It would be debated and studied ad nauseum, to the point where the Nazis would have many months to fortify the cliffs and beaches.  Then as the mission was launched, our "helpful" news media would gain knowledge of the operation from snitches in the "shadow government" and alert the enemy with zest, under the guise of free speech!  As the invasion began, the Nazis would be emboldened by the many subversives in our country who would cry from the highest rooftops "Germany did NOT attack us, we have no right to attack them.  The Nazi freedom fighters deserve to be left alone!"  As our soldiers fell on the beach, the news media would report where each one was from and list off their favorite hobbies.  At the end of "the longest day", all Americans would be completely demoralized as they witnessed thousands of bodies lying in the sand and floating in the ocean.  Not a pretty picture of failure, is it?  Here is a Youtube video of how a "modern D-Day" would be covered by the news media:

As you were reading that depressing passage, I hope you thought to yourself, "This is exactly what is happening today!"  Liberal Democrats and even some Republicans I'm ashamed to admit, have made this preposterous and irrelevant argument that Iraq and Afghanistan didn't attack us, thus we had no legitimate reason to invade either one.  NO S**T SHERLOCK, neither did Germany in World War 2.  We took on the Germans because they were spreading tyranny all over Europe and our leaders knew that isolationist thought would someday doom us when we became the target!

With regard to the engagement of radical Islamic thought, the 1990's was mostly a decade of isolationist thinking by the Clinton administration.  Similar to the nutty in-law at the July 4th party who nobody wants to talk to, it was casually ignored by everyone who had the authority to make fighting terrorism a priority.  The events of 9/11 changed all that, forever.

Now back to the events of the D-Day invasion on June 6th 1944.  By far, the most incredible event that day was the climbing of the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc by our U.S. Army Rangers to take out the powerful Nazi guns placed there.  These guns had unfettered access to the entire landing zone and would have wreaked havoc on our forces had they not been brought under U.S. control.  What kind of person will climb a rope ladder, up a 300 foot high cliff, as Nazi soldiers are shooting at him and throwing down hand grenades?   Well, I suspect it is the same kind of person who will patrol a street in Baghdad, Iraq in 110 degree heat, with improvised explosive devices planted all over the place!

Folks, I could go on and on all day long drawing parallels between the fight against the Nazis on D-Day and the fight against Islamo-Fascism today.  But there is ONE THING for which I cannot make a parallel comparison and that is the level of fanaticism and visciousness of THIS ENEMY.  The Nazis were viscious but they took our soldiers as prisoners of war and brought them to POW camps where they took care of them.  And if anyone has ever watched an episode of "Hogan's Heroes", they know how much fun our troops had there!  Just kidding.  The al-Qaeda terrorists we fight in Iraq today do not bother with such niceties as POW camps, they simply torture our brave troopers then cut their heads off and hang them by their feet from a bridge.  Everyone needs to understand that this is an enemy which takes no prisoners and leaves nothing standing in its way!  With an enemy of this frightening magnitude, you show them no mercy and you certainly do not try to confer constitutional rights on them, rather you kill them on the battlefield or take them to a jail cell in Guantanomo Bay until the END of hostilities or until they rot, whichever occurs first!
